History isn't usually my go-to when I want to read for enjoyment and relaxation, but this book really kept me hooked! I love the way it made history relatable, by giving modern day comparisons to the major events that helped shape our great country. Even my 10-year old son was riveted when I read several passages aloud to him! Wonderful book!!
The author's idea of comparing the events leading up to the revolution with every day events was a novel approach which I found ver engaging. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a high level view of what led to the colonies Declaration of Independence.
I am not a history buff, but I have to admit this book really kept my interest and was a fabulous read. I really enjoyed it. I also loved his personal references. Excellent job. Cant wait to read more!

Marty Griffin uses present day stories to lay the groundwork of context before diving into some key history leading up to the Revolutionary War. Stories range from the People's Choice Awards and small print, to Paul Revere and Pokémon Go, to Benjamin Franklin and the steroid fiasco with Mark McGwire, and more. An interesting way to brush up on some history.
Well written book. Unique approach to history telling. Author provided current events to help explain the underlying thoughts going through the minds of early settlers as they made the decisions that led to major historical events. Made it much more relatable and easier to read than just learning about basic facts like most history books.
This book really drew me in! I usually do not read historical books, however the conversational tone and modern examples painted a perfect picture of the events leading up to the revolution. I loved the comparisons to his current daily life that truly gave me the perspective and emotions of the colonists. Reading this book made it fun to learn about our country's beginnings. I feel like it gives me examples and talking points to start discussions with my children, to help them understand the reasons why the colonists sought their independence from the British. Easy to read, short chapters made it convenient to pick up and ready anytime, even if I only had a few minutes.
History has never been my favorite subject, so I began reading this book with a bit of the familiar dread of dry, boring lists of facts. I was not prepared to be so thoroughly engaged. The book's format is unique and interesting, with each fact sandwiched between amusing anecdotes of the author's life, which make each bit of history relatable as well as memorable. Part of its charm is its conversational tone and structure. It reminds me of listening to a podcast (which is no surprise, as the author is also a podcaster), so it feels more like a pal is talking to you about history rather than calling to mind a lecture hall with a droning professor rattling off facts. I highly recommend it if you're interested in learning about American history but also generally have a hard time sticking with nonfiction historical works.
